What is tech neck?

Tech neck, also referred to as text neck, is a new name for an old issue — neck pain that’s caused by repetitive strain and injury to the muscles and other tissue structures of the cervical spine.

The ever-evolving screen technology we’ve come to love and even rely on lies at the root of tech neck.

What does tech neck feel like?

  • Generalized aching discomfort in the lower neck, shoulders, and upper back
  • Sharp, stabbing, or shooting pain within the neck and shoulder area
  • Headaches/Migraine
  • Decreased Range of Motion (ROM) in the neck, upper back, and shoulders
  •  Increased pain when tilting the head forward and looking down to text
  • Jaw pain due
  • Tingling pain and numbness in the arms and hands

How does tech neck occur?

The average adult head weighs 10-12 pounds and is supported by the bony structures, muscles, ligaments, and tendons of the neck.  When you tilt your head forward and look down, the most commonly used posture for texting, the weight of your head places additional 50-60 pounds of force on the neck.

Our necks simply are not built to withstand that type of force for prolonged periods.  The result is muscular and ligamentous strain and other structural issues that cause the symptoms associated with tech neck.

How does Massage Therapy benefit children?

Children and adolescents benefit from Massage Therapy just as adults do. Massage Therapy provides a calming effect promoting improved sleep quality and quantity, enhanced attention to detail due to increased focus, stress management, increased body awareness, or enhanced digestion with abdominal massage. Children and adolescents benefit reduced tension from sports activities, ailments, conditions, and injuries. Children also benefit reduced tension from growing pains.

Self-Care needs are important for children and adolescents on a regular basis. Parents of younger children are welcome to stay during treatment and are encouraged to learn soothing techniques to practice while at home. Treatment with children is always child led, although children move frequently and may not appear to be relaxed they are receiving the wellness benefits provided by Massage Therapy.

Appointment recommendation for young children is 30 minute or 45 minute treatments. 60 minute treatments are available for adolescents. Direct billing is also available for children and adolescents with most insurance providers. It is always best to contact your insurance provider to determine your insurance coverage.
